High-ranking officials in the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Establishment are often likely to be pulled down once they move into such idle positions as the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Xi Jinping is pictured attending a meeting of the Chinese Communist Party’s National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which opened on March 4.
Wang Zhonglin, secretary of the CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee, became acting governor of Hubei, a news confirmed at the latest meeting of the Hubei Provincial People’s Congress on May 7. At the same time, the meeting accepted the request for resignation of former governor Wang Xiaodong, who was in poor health. On the same day it was also rumored that, in addition to Wang Zhonglin, Zhongnanhai had just carried out another round of personnel layout of provincial ministers. In addition to Wang Xiaodong, there is also concern that a member of Xi’s army may step down.
Beijing-based Dovetail.com reports that Wang’s reshuffle is believed to be related to an April 30 meeting of the CCP’s Politburo. At that time, CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping and other leaders “discussed other matters” as a rule.
According to the Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao, the Politburo meeting at the end of last month discussed personnel changes that may include, in addition to the confirmed Wang Zhonglin, Chen Weijun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and secretary of the Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee, to take over as secretary of the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee; Wang Xiaodong, who resigned, to serve on a special committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; Wang Dongfeng, secretary of the Hebei Provincial Party Committee, to take over the National Development and Reform Commission; Xu Qin, governor of the province, to become secretary of the provincial party committee; and Yang Dongqi, deputy secretary of the Shandong Provincial Party Committee, to take over as governor. Yang Dongqi replaced; Shandong Vice Governor Zeng Zanrong will become secretary of the Qingdao Municipal Party Committee, among the Standing Committee of the provincial party committee, to fill the vacancy after Wang Qingxian was promoted to the governor of Anhui Province.
Among them, Wang Xiaodong transferred to the CPPCC belongs to the idle position, in the past, many of the original powerful senior officials are retired to the second line of the NPC, CPPCC positions after being investigated.
Wang Xiaodong resigned as governor of Hubei province on May 7, the former secretary-general of the Hubei provincial government, the former party secretary of the provincial government organs, and the former director of the provincial government office, Bebe Bixiong, was indicted on suspicion of accepting bribes and abuse of power.
Since Bie Bixiong was the then governor of Hubei Province, Wang Xiaodong’s big secretary and “big butler”, the aforementioned sensitive information has led to speculation about Wang Xiaodong’s future fate.
It is worth noting that if Wang Dongfeng, secretary of the Hebei Provincial Party Committee, takes over the National Development and Reform Commission, it may mean that the current head of the Commission, He Lifeng (b. Feb. 4, 1955, 66), a native of Xingning, Guangdong province, who has served in Fujian for a long time, is a former member of Xi Jinping’s staff in Fujian and is considered a close associate of Xi. He Lifeng became director of the Development and Reform Commission in February 2017 and vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference the following year. He is a member of the 19th Central Committee.
