India has suspended approval of imports of Chinese-made wireless mobile devices for several months in a row, and any finished electronic devices equipped with wifi modules, including Bluetooth speakers, wireless headsets, smartphones, smart watches and notebooks, are currently being delayed, industry sources disclosed on May 7.
Sources said that India’s “Ministry of Wireless Mobile Planning and Coordination” has suspended the approval of applications for the import of finished electronic devices from China involving wifi modules since at least November last year. There are currently more than 80 applications from Chinese, U.S. and South Korean companies awaiting approval from the department, causing major manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Lenovo to delay the launch of their products in India.
The report said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking a tough stance on Chinese imports amid calls for greater self-reliance in India’s economy. The Indian government’s idea is to prompt companies to manufacture these products in India, the sources said.
