The former chairman of the Hong Kong Democratic Party, Wu Zhiwei, whose father passed away last month, set up a funeral on Friday night (7). He earlier applied to the Correctional Services Department to go out to attend the funeral service, was refused by the Department, but also suggested that he “video mourning”, was criticized for disrespect with electronic equipment to photograph the remains. He then applied for bail again to the High Court, which granted his application for bail, allowing him, as the only son in the family, to go out for a short time to mourn his father.
The Department of Justice said the prosecution and defense agreed to allow Hu to go out to participate in his father’s funeral under certain conditions, stressing that it was based on humanitarian considerations, during the relevant time, place and route must not be disclosed to the public, the funeral ceremony must be held in a private occasion, and only allow family members and other designated persons to participate, not to contact the outside world.
The wife of Hu posted on social media platforms yesterday that the funeral service is only for family, friends and neighbors to offer condolences due to the limitation of the funeral home and the epidemic.
He was charged with conspiracy to subvert state power for his participation in last year’s pro-democracy primary election, and with inciting others to knowingly participate in an unauthorized assembly for his involvement in last year’s July 1 march. Both cases have not been convicted, but he has been remanded to the scabbard since January 8.
