Mohamed Nasheed, the former Maldivian president and speaker of parliament, was hospitalized yesterday after a bomb assassination attack and underwent further surgery today, but his condition is said to be stable.
An official said Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of the Maldives, was seriously injured last night when an explosive device mounted on a motorcycle detonated as he entered his car in the capital, Male.
A Maldivian government official told AFP: “Nasheed survived the blast, he is injured but in stable condition.”
ADK Hospital in the Maldives said the hospital had thoroughly assessed Nasheed’s health and that the 53-year-old would need to undergo further surgery.
ADK Hospital did not release further details, but a member of Nasheed’s family said doctors removed bomb fragments from his lungs and liver.
The family member said, “We are hopeful that he will make a full recovery.” The family said Nahid was still responsive when he was taken to the hospital and could talk to doctors. One of his bodyguards was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Officials said the locomotive with the explosive device was parked in the narrow alley leading to Nasheed’s house.
Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, a close ally of Nasheed and the current president of the Maldives, said an investigation into the case is underway.
