An apartment building near the River Thames in London, England, burst into flames early Friday morning. Authorities sent 125 firefighters to extinguish the fire an hour later, and dozens of people are now injured. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The fire broke out around 9 a.m. Friday in a 19-story apartment building in London’s Thameside, New Providence Docklands development.
The six windows of the burning floor, burned only the window frames, charred objects fell from time to time.
The fire gradually spread to the floors above and the sound of burning glass could be heard.
When firefighters arrived, set up a ladder to put out the fire, the fire has spread three floors, the windows were all charred.
Witnesses said that the fire was finally extinguished around 10:00 am.
It is reported that the fire is concentrated in the building’s 8, 9, 10 three floors.
The smoke enveloped the entire building.
London Fire Department sent 125 firefighters to put out the fire.
London Emergency Services tweeted that paramedics arrived at the scene and treated many of the injured, but did not report the number of people killed.
It was also reported that two injured people were taken to hospital and 36 others were treated at the scene.
Local media reported that residents of the development have been demanding the demolition of the building’s exterior walls since 2017.
It is reported that the apartment contractor used aluminum composite material on the exterior walls. The same flammable cladding material that sparked the apartment fire in London four years ago that shocked the world and killed 72 people.
The contractor, Barrymore, issued a statement Friday saying it would work closely with the fire department and promised to begin replacing the apartment facades next Monday.
