Shock! “Curiosity returns panoramic photos of Mars

The Trail rover and its flying helicopter partner, Jiji, are the stars of the headlines right now, but that doesn’t stop NASA’s other Mars rover, Curiosity, from doing the work it’s doing, having just taken a stunning 360-degree panorama from the top of a rock formation on Mars on May 6.

The Curiosity rover previously took a stunning selfie at “Mont Mercou,” a scenic rocky outcrop in Gale Crater. Next, Curiosity climbed the mountain, took some time to look around, and then took some photos.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory provided the panorama in the form of an interactive YouTube video and a zoomable photo view. The panorama consists of 132 images taken on April 15 that can be zoomed in to view details of the rocky and dusty landscape.

NASA said, “The panorama has been white-balanced so that the colors of the rock materials resemble how they would look in daytime lighting conditions on Earth.”

It is understood that Curiosity is not just enjoying the view from the top of Mont Mercou, but has also recently drilled a hole to get a closer look at the geology. Curiosity plans to drive away soon to continue its journey in the crater.
