China-India bad blood continues, India suspended imports of a class of Chinese goods

India has suspended approvals for imports of wireless Internet access (WiFi) electronics from China for the past several months, causing U.S. computer makers Dell and HP, as well as Chinese companies Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Lenovo, to delay product launches in the key growth market, sources said, as China and India sparred over the border conflict.

India has delayed imports of finished electronic devices from China, such as Bluetooth speakers, wireless headsets, smartphones, smart watches and laptops, sources said.

The Department of Wireless Planning and Coordination under India’s Ministry of Communications has suspended approvals for the import of these devices since at least November last year. More than 80 such applications from U.S., Chinese and South Korean companies have been pending approval by Indian authorities. Even some Indian companies, which import some of their finished products from China, are waiting for approval.

Sources said companies are lobbying to seek clearance. Dell, HP, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Lenovo have yet to comment. India’s Ministry of Communications also has not commented. The Indian government needs to respond to statements from industry lobbying groups and individual companies, the sources said.
