EU Sanctions against Belarusian President Lukashenko

EU further sanctions Belarus. Europe announced on Friday sanctions against Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and his son, as well as his national security adviser.

The European Union announced Friday that it has added Lukashenko and a total of 15 other Belarusian officials to its sanctions list. Europe alleges that they were involved in the violent repression and intimidation of peaceful demonstrators, as well as opposition members and journalists, following the presidential election in Belarus in August. The EU will freeze their assets under EU jurisdiction and ban them from entering the EU and from providing funds to citizens and entities of EU member states.

The EU adopted its first round of sanctions in October, placing 40 Belarusian officials on its sanctions list.
