China’s Technology Companies Forced to Abandon Indian Market in Spate of Sanctions

In recent months, the Indian government has launched a series of sanctions against Chinese cell phone applications, and in the past week, India has ordered the banning of 43 more Chinese cell phone applications. So far, more than 200 Chinese apps have been banned from entering the Indian market, which has deterred Chinese investors from investing in India.

According to the Financial Times, many Chinese tech companies investing in India are shrinking their frontiers, as it is unclear how long these bans will last.

Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has laid off employees in India and scaled down its “innovation program. Tencent has avoided sanctions by handing over the distribution rights to its popular game “Return of the Jedi” to South Korean companies.

Jitterbug is worried that its employees will leave under the pressure of sanctions. Other companies are also planning to leave the Indian market.

Some industry analysts say that the current tensions between China and India involve not only commercial issues, but also social and political issues, and it is difficult to see a clear deadline for the Indian side to relax its position.

The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is also continuing to investigate cell phone applications by Chinese technology companies.
