The Voice of Tibet reported on Thursday that a Tibetan from Nagqu, Tibet, died in prison due to ill-treatment after being arrested for refusing to cooperate with China’s 11th campaign, some two years after the news broke outside the country.
Sources close to the case said Norsang, a Tibetan from Dachian Township in the Nagqu region, and five other people were arrested in September 2019 for failing to cooperate with the government’s request to hang the five-star red flag on the roof of their home and sing praises of “the kindness of the motherland” in preparation for the 70th anniversary of the National Day. The other five Tibetans, namely Sivang Rangyel, Stey Wangjie, Dudul Raj, Yangpei and Tsygye, were released after a period of detention by the authorities, but Norsang was forced to undergo “political ideological education” and died after being mistreated in prison.
It is reported that Norsang was the father of six children and his wife was pregnant for several months when he died, so the news at the time caused serious damage to his wife’s spirit.
The source said the authorities had falsely claimed that Northam had jumped into the river and killed himself because he could not repay the huge sum of money, but this excuse was unfounded. Norsang, who had always dared to express his dissatisfaction with the authorities’ pressure policies and held strong beliefs in the Dalai Lama, was subjected to inhumane torture and ill-treatment during his detention and was eventually persecuted to death.
