The Economist, in conjunction with YouGov, surveyed 1,500 U.S. adults May 1-4 and released the results this week, showing that 26 percent of Americans believe they are safe in public without a mask. 49 percent of respondents said they “always wear a mask” when going out in the past seven days.
The survey also asked respondents to rate their safety in post-vaccination activities. The majority felt that vaccinated individuals were “completely” or “somewhat” safe interacting with anyone outside and with vaccinated individuals indoors without a mask.
Notably, unvaccinated people who interacted outdoors without masks were considered “somewhat” or “completely” unsafe by 49 percent of people, and unvaccinated people who interacted with each other indoors without masks were considered unsafe by nearly 63 percent of people.
U.S. health officials have declined to say when U.S. health agencies will stop recommending that Americans wear masks in public. In February, Dr. Fauci suggested that wearing masks may continue until 2022.
