Elise Stefanik, the favorite to chair the House Republican Conference.
Recently, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who is expected to replace Republican congressional number three Liz Cheney and supports Make America Great Again (MAGA), said Republicans need to work as “a team” in 2022 to win back the House. The Republicans need to work as a “team” in 2022 to win back the House. She said she is proud to stand up for Trump, who has been endorsed by former President Trump. She believes the Republican Party must work with Trump in the midterm elections.
Stefanik is a Republican U.S. Representative from New York. She has been a vocal fighter in Congress in support of Trump over the past few years, notably during the House impeachment hearings for Trump in 2019, when she was named honorary chair of Trump’s re-election campaign in New York.
In an interview with Steven Bannon on Thursday, May 4, Stefanik said, “My vision is to run with the support of the president (Trump) and his constituents, and I want (everyone) to be one voice and send a clear message that we are one team. That means working with the president (Trump) …… I’m proud to stand up for President Trump.”
On Wednesday, May 5, Trump officially announced his endorsement of Stefanik, backing her to replace Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican, as chairman of the Republican Conference. Cheney has caused many House Republicans to lose confidence in her because of her constant negative comments about Trump. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Whip Steve Scalise and many other Republicans have abandoned Cheney in favor of Stefanik.
I think she (Cheney) has a real problem,” McCarthy told host Steve Doocy on “Fox & Friends” this week. I’ve had enough of …… I’ve had enough of her. You know, I’ve lost my confidence …… Well, somebody has to make a motion, and I think that could happen.”
McCarthy continued, “That decision has been made. I’ve already heard concerns from members about her ability to carry out her job as conference chair. If we can win a majority, we need to form a whole synergy. Remember, majorities are not given for nothing, they are won. It’s about (the Republican Party) moving forward and (we need to) fight Joe. Biden …… Republicans should be working together, not attacking each other.”
On Tuesday, May 4, Republican U.S. Rep. Lance Gooden of Texas also called for Cheney’s removal as chairman of the House Republican Conference. He told the media, “Her (Cheney’s) role is to lead the House Republican Party and deliver the message, but she is completely out of step with the majority of our party. With her in a leadership role, we can’t work for an America First agenda.”
Lauren Fine, a spokeswoman for Whip Scalise, reportedly told the media via email Wednesday, May 5: “House Republicans need to focus on taking back the House in 2022 and fighting the radical socialist agenda of Speaker Pelosi and Biden. And Stefanik is firmly committed to the Republican strategy, so Whip Scalise has pledged to support her as conference chair.”
The statement is the first clear statement from the top of the Republican Party supporting Cheney’s ouster. Although there are not many words, but Republican leaders have gradually reached a consensus in recent days.
Cheney, who voted to impeach President Trump in February, blamed President Trump for the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol. This week, she publicly accused Trump of “poisoning our democracy” with his claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. She also called on people to join the “crusade” against Trump.
Despite the strong words, some media revealed that Cheney is ready to be ousted from office. Unlike the call to step down in February, this time she did not call others for help or fight back.
However, President Biden joined some Democrats in defending Cheney on May 5, hoping that she, who opposes Trump, will be able to keep her position as chairman of the Republican Conference. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also praised Cheney on May 4, saying she was “courageous” and “patriotic”. But ironically, she said Cheney’s name wrong.
