The U.S. government announced it was suspending patent protection for the New Crown (a Chinese Communist virus) vaccine to expand global supply, which the WHO welcomed and the European Union said it would discuss the U.S. decision. The German government, on the other hand, issued a statement on Thursday (6) opposing the proposal to exempt the patent rights of the new vaccine.
A spokesman for the German government said in the statement that Germany supports the global vaccine access mechanism and expects more people to have access to vaccines, but believes that the biggest limitation to vaccine production is not patents, but capacity and quality standards. Safeguarding intellectual property rights is a source of creativity and will continue to protect them in the future, the statement said.
The statement continued that the U.S. proposal to exempt vaccine patents would have a serious impact on vaccine production, and that pharmaceutical companies may not actively produce vaccines in the future if they do not have a profit incentive for research and development.
