As the outbreak in India spreads across South Asia, Sri Lanka today announced the closure of its border with India, following Nepal and Bangladesh, becoming the latest country to close its border with India.
Sri Lanka has reported 1,939 new confirmed cases of 2019 coronavirus disease (CCA virus, COVID-19) and 14 deaths from the disease in the past 24 hours.
The Sri Lankan Navy said it has stepped up patrols to stop Indian trawlers from approaching. It also said that it has blocked 11 such fishing boats.
Sri Lanka has also announced a ban on passengers from Indian flights.
Bangladesh and Nepal have banned Indian flights and are seeking to close their borders with India. India has seen a spike in new cases over the past three weeks, with more than 230,000 deaths from the infection and at least 21 million confirmed cases.
