Foreign Minister Wang Yi began his visit in Japan with talks with Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Shigeru. The two sides agreed to hold a ministerial-level “high-level economic dialogue” next year.
In view of the Chinese official ships entering the Senkaku Islands, the waters surrounding China’s Diaoyu Islands, Toshimitsu Maki asked Wang Yi to respond positively.
Wang Yi emphasized that China’s position on the Diaoyu Islands is clear, that it will protect national sovereignty, and that it hopes to turn the East China Sea into a “sea of peace” through cooperation with Japan.
The two sides agreed that the defense departments of the two countries would open a hotline within the year, and that business people would resume exchanges between the two countries within the month.
Shigeki said that a stable relationship between the two countries is vital for both the region and the globe. Japan and China, as major powers, should contribute to solving important issues facing the world, such as virus pandemics, climate change, and trade and investment.
The two countries should deepen cooperation in a range of areas, including responding to the epidemic, defending multilateralism, and building a bilateral relationship that meets the needs of a new era, Wang Yi said. Both countries should contribute to the promotion of peace and stability in the region and the world as a whole.
