G7 foreign ministers’ meeting communiqué strongly worded attack on China, Russia, Iran

The G-7 foreign ministers issued a communiqué after a meeting in London on Wednesday (May 5) that came down hard on China, Russia and Iran, calling on China to “respect human rights and fundamental freedoms” in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. The seven countries will intensify collective action to stop China’s “coercive economic policies”.

The three-day meeting of G7 foreign ministers was held in the British capital of London on Monday, according to AFP. The G7 foreign ministers’ meeting also marked the beginning of direct face-to-face meetings between leaders after months of video conferences and the new U.S. administration’s claims of multilateralism, a month before the G7 leaders’ summit.

In its 12,400-word communiqué, the G7 foreign ministers said they were “extremely concerned” about human rights abuses in China, particularly of the Uighur minority in Xinjiang and other religious and ethnic minority groups. The communiqué also accused China of fundamentally infringing on Hong Kong’s democratic electoral system. The communiqué of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting called on China to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The communiqué of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting stressed that the seven industrialized countries will intensify their collective action to stop China’s “coercive economic policies” and to counter the false messages spread by Russia.

The communiqué also accused Russia of “significantly strengthening the massive deployment of Russian military forces along the Ukrainian border and in the illegally annexed Crimea” and condemned Moscow’s “malicious activities aimed at undermining the democratic systems of other countries, including through the use of disinformation.

On Iran, the G-7 welcomed discussions to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal withdrawn by former U.S. President Donald Trump, but the G-7 demanded that Tehran unconditionally release the detained British-Iranian dual national Ratcliffe, who has just been sentenced to a new prison term.

According to Reuters, the communiqué of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting said that the G7 “supports Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the World Health Organization forum and the World Health Assembly.

The G7 foreign ministers’ meeting communiqué stated, “We value the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and encourage the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues.”

On the cross-strait issue, the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting communiqué said, “We reiterate our strong opposition to any unilateral actions that could raise tensions and destabilize the region.”

Netizen “conscience, self-knowledge” forwarded the news and commented, “The lack of morality and human rights is China’s strong point, and it has not changed its nature for more than 2,000 years.”
