U.S. Sanctions Four Chinese, Russian Companies for Allegedly Supporting Iran’s Nuclear Program

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday (Nov. 27) announced economic sanctions against four Chinese and Russian companies for allegedly supporting Iran’s development of its nuclear program.

The United States has imposed sanctions on four Chinese and Russian companies for supporting Iran’s nuclear program,” Pompeo said in a tweet Friday, according to AFP.

The four sanctioned companies are two Chinese companies, Chengdu Best New Materials Co. Two Russian companies, Joint Stock Company Elecon and Joint Stock Corporation Elecon, are accused of “providing sensitive technology and equipment to Iran’s nuclear missile development program.

The four companies are accused of “providing sensitive technology and equipment to Iran’s nuclear missile development program” and will be subject to U.S. government aid and export restrictions for the next two years, according to a U.S. State Department statement. The sanctions were imposed on May 25.

Pompeo stressed, “We will continue to use all sanctions to prevent Iran from increasing its nuclear capabilities.”

In 2018, President Trump withdrew the United States from a previous international agreement with Iran aimed at preventing the country from developing nuclear weapons because it was not strong enough, and has since reinstated comprehensive sanctions against Iran under a policy of “maximum pressure,” while demonstrating his determination to target any country or business that does not comply with U.S. Iran policy.
