U.S. Trade Representative David Deitch said on May 5 that he expects to hold the first talks with the Chinese trade team in the near future, and that the Biden administration will negotiate on the basis of the “first phase of the U.S.-China trade agreement” reached by the former Trump administration, respecting policy continuity, and whether to cancel the tariff increase on the mainland will depend on the results of the ensuing dialogue.
The U.S. does not shy away from taking a tough stance on Beijing, but must do so fairly, Dyche noted. She said she has not yet spoken with China’s trade negotiator Liu He, who is expected to have his first contact with the Chinese trade team in the near future.
