Japan’s child population hits record low for 40 consecutive years

The number of children under the age of 15 is about 14.93 million, decreasing for 40 consecutive years; the ratio of children to the total population has also declined for 47 consecutive years, decreasing by 0.1 percentage points from last year to a record low of 11.9%.

When compared to major countries with a total population of over 40 million, the ratio of children to the total population is about 18.6% in the United States and 13.3% in Italy, while Japan has the lowest ratio of children to the total population.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of the Japanese government, as of April 1, 2021, there will be 14.93 million children under the age of 15 in Japan, including 7.65 million boys and 7.28 million girls.

The number of children in Japan has been decreasing every year since 1982, and the total number of children this year is about 190,000 less than last year, showing a continuous decrease for 40 years.
