The Song Dynasty was an era of elegance and poetry, with many literary figures, leaving behind many good stories in the literary world. Song Qi, known as the “Red Apricot Scholar”, had his legendary fate determined by two poems!
Song Qi and his brother Song Ziang were known as the “Big and Little Song”, who were both great court officials and literary scholars of the Northern Song Dynasty. When they were still commoners, they were appreciated by the local governor, who was also the teacher of Song Renzong, Xia Hori. Once, Xia Hori asked Song Ziang to write a poem on the spot under the title of “Poem on Falling Flowers”. One of the lines in Song Ziang’s poem was: “The Hangao pendant is lost in the river, and the Golden Valley building is dangerous to the ground.” Song Qi also has a line: “Will fly more for back wind dance, has fallen still into half face makeup.”
When people look at it today, they may think: both brothers seem to write very well, how to comment on this? I heard Xia Horrified say, “The fact that my brother sings about falling flowers but does not directly write about the falling flowers shows that he has a high moral character and a stable personality. In the future, he will definitely be the top scholar of the Song Dynasty and will become a prime minister.” The words turned and said, “The younger brother, Song, is not as good as the older brother, but in the future, he can also be a close minister to the emperor!”
Coincidentally, Song and his younger brother took the imperial examinations at the same time that year. The court originally decided that Song Qi would be the first and Song Ziang the third. However, the Empress Dowager thought that the younger brother should not be placed in front of the older brother. The ministers were ordered to adjust the ranking of the candidates, so Song Qi became the tenth place, while Song Ziang was ranked first and became the first scholar.
In fact, from the first ranking, the talents of the big and small Song were comparable, but the ancients valued ethics and morality more, which gave the brother a small lead in the ranking. Later, Song Ziang became a chancellor and Song Qi was made a shangshu. Why did Xia Horrified’s words work so well? It probably comes from the common saying that “the writing is as good as the person”.
While his brother assisted the emperor in ruling the country, his younger brother, Song Qi, went further in his poetic career and produced many great poems that were widely circulated. One of these poems helped him reap a great marriage.
When Song Qi was a “Hanlin bachelor”, he happened to come across the palace carriages passing by one day. In one of the palace carriages, a court lady lifted the curtain to look out. When she saw Song Qi, she suddenly called out in surprise, “Little Song!” Before Song Qi could reply to the palace maid, the carriage went far away.
However, the beautiful silhouette of the courtesan remained in Song Qi’s heart from then on. But the court lady is far away in the deep courtyard of the harem, is the emperor’s people, he is a courtier, let alone love with the court lady, even to see one is more difficult than the sky ah. Song Qi misses the courtesan so much that he tosses and turns, so he writes a poignant song called “Partridge Sky” and ends with the words, “Liu Lang already hates Peng Mountain, but it’s tens of thousands of times farther away.”
Song’s work is always a masterpiece. This lyric was soon sung in the capital and even spread to the palace. When Song Ren Zong took a look at it, he read Song Qi’s mind. He compared the palace to the Peng Mountain, expressing the melancholy and regret that the two were separated from each other by a distance. However, someone actually secretly hit the idea of the palace maid, is not this the crime of deceiving the king, the emperor can not care?
Song Renzong really asked: “Which palace maid in which car, calling for Xiao Song ah?” The palace maid had to bravely admit, because before at the banquet, had seen summoned Hanlin bachelor, left and right ministers said he was Xiao Song. Unbelievably, she saw him in the car that day, so she couldn’t help calling out.
Next, Song Renzong held a banquet and invited Song Qi to attend, and even ordered someone to sing the song “Partridge Sky” on the spot as if nothing had happened. Song Qi heard this and was shocked. Did the emperor set up a banquet to ask him about his crime? He thought he was in trouble, so he kneeled down and pleaded guilty. But Song Renzong joked, “Although Peng Mountain is far away, it is very close to you today!” After that, he gave the court lady to Song Qi to fulfill their marriage. This is really “a gentleman has the beauty of manhood”!
Although Song Qi did not receive the title of Scholar, he had a “strange encounter” that was the envy of future generations of literati. It turns out that not only were the literati of the Song Dynasty elegant and romantic, but the emperor of the Song Dynasty was also very enlightened and benevolent!
