According to People magazine on May 3, Melinda Gates, 56, filed for divorce from Bill Gates, 65, on Monday afternoon, May 3, local time, and the two then tweeted a joint statement on their divorce. As for the reasons for the divorce, the two declared that they “don’t believe we can grow together in the next phase of our lives.”
Since then, the 27-year marriage between Bill and Melinda has ended completely, but the issue of the handling of Bill’s assets of up to $130.5 billion, as well as the custody of his three children, son Rory John, 21, daughter Phoebe Adele, 18, and Jennifer Katherine, 25, has naturally become the focus of attention.
People magazine said Melinda filed for divorce in King County, Washington, and that the couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, but will instead divide their assets based on a separation agreement. In her petition, Melinda asked the court to dissolve their marriage and rule that their marriage had ended on the date specified in the separation contract.
At the same time, Melinda filed a temporary request to set financial restrictions to limit her and Bill’s ability to dispose of property or amend insurance policies, unless there was a written agreement or court order to do so. Going forward, they will be responsible for any future debts they incur, except as agreed in writing. They both have access to all tax, financial, legal and family records. Needless to say, there may be a hidden agenda behind the couple’s divorce.
Bill and Melinda’s divorce filing case will reportedly be reviewed this September and appear in court in April 2022. In addition, their alternative dispute resolution date is set for March 2022. However, the exact date of the couple’s separation is not known so far.
The Bill and Gates’ divorce certainly made headlines, and the Internet was flooded with comments. Notably, while expressing regret over the breakup of their 27-year marriage, many netizens pointed out that Bill had declared at an Internet conference that he ranked marrying Melinda as the first of the three best decisions he ever made. However, Bill went back on his word.
