Blinken: China’s Internal Repression and External Attacks Challenge the World Order

In an interview broadcast Sunday, Secretary of State John Blinken said Beijing is challenging the world order by becoming more “repressive” internally and more “aggressive” in its attacks externally. The goal of the United States is to maintain this rules-based world order.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on CBS’s “60 Minutes” on May 2: “We’ve seen China act more oppressively at home and more aggressively abroad over the last several years. That’s a fact.”

Blinken continued, “China is the only country in the world that has the military, economic and diplomatic capacity to undermine or challenge the international order. And that rules-based international order is one that we hold dear and are determined to defend.

I want to say very clearly ……,” he stated Our goal is not to contain China, to restrain China, to limit China; our goal is to preserve the rules-based order that China is challenging.”

Earlier, in his first address to Congress on Wednesday, President Joe Biden said he was not “seeking conflict” with China, but was “prepared to defend U.S. interests in all areas.

Tensions between the two powers have been recurring in recent years, AFP said. Chinese and U.S. armed forces are vying for influence in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly around the South China Sea and Taiwan.

In addition, in March this year, Blinken in also insisted that “what China is doing to the majority of Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region is genocide.”
