Microsoft founder Bill Gates announced on Twitter that he and his wife Melinda Gates are divorcing, ending a 27-year marriage. Neither of them has talked about the reasons for the divorce so far. U.S. media said Melinda could become the richest woman in the world.
Microsoft founder Gates, 65, announced on Twitter, “After a long period of reflection and adjustment, we have decided to end our marriage. For the past 27 years, we have raised three wonderful children and built a foundation to help people around the world enjoy healthy and fulfilling lives.
Gates’ tweet added: “We continue to believe in this mission and will continue to work together at the foundation, but no longer believe that we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. Please give us space and respect our privacy as we embark on this new life.
The Gateses have three children: Jennifer, 25, Lori, 21, and Phoebe, 18.
Sideman & Bancroft divorce attorney Monica Mazzei said the biggest question about the Gateses’ foundation and family office is how deeply the two will work together in the future. Often foundations and family offices are split in two to allow for a greater degree of autonomy.
Mazzei said that Gates and Melinda live in Washington State and have a community property state.
