The European Union Executive Committee said today that in view of the progress of vaccination against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the current global pandemic situation, it is recommended that member states relax the current restrictions on “non-essential travel” into the EU.
The relaxation would include entry into the EU for citizens of countries with good epidemiological status and for persons who have received vaccines approved for use in the EU, and the list of approved vaccines may be extended in the future to include vaccines listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for emergency use.
The EU’s “non-essential travel” ban has been in place for more than a year, and the proposal shows the EU’s gradual progress toward revitalizing economic activity. But the proposal also includes an “emergency interruption” mechanism that would allow the EU’s external borders to close quickly as new variants of the virus develop.
However, the proposal still has many points that need to be coordinated and further clarified by the EU, for example, many countries around the world are only discussing whether to launch a concept similar to the “vaccine passport” and how to verify the proof of vaccination in each country in the future, and many countries are not currently open to European citizens to travel to “non-essential travel “Whether Europe will first open one-way.
The European Union passed a “digital green pass” in March this year to make it more convenient for vaccinated people to move across borders, and the proposal was passed by the European Parliament at the end of April and is expected to hit the road in June at the earliest. “The European Parliament passed the proposal at the end of April and it is expected to be launched in June at the earliest.
