Hong Kong is experiencing a new epidemic backlash. The number of new cases of coronavirus infections has surpassed 6,000, with 58 of them linked to a dance party.
The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Hong Kong Department of Health reported on Friday (November 27) that there were 92 new infections, including three cases from overseas and 89 local infections. The total number of cases in Hong Kong has surpassed 6,000, reaching 6,040.
This is the fourth backlash in Hong Kong after the first round of the outbreak was brought under control. Since Nov. 19, the number of new infections has increased rapidly, with the number of new cases remaining above 60 per day for the past five days.
Zhong Nanshan, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in a media interview in Shenzhen on Friday that the recent increase in new local cases of coronary pneumonia in Hong Kong is a dangerous sign that requires special attention.
According to Zhong, Hong Kong’s current priority is to conduct universal nucleic acid testing. He said Hong Kong did a good job of controlling the spread of the disease by emphasizing preventive measures such as wearing masks and maintaining social distance in the early stages of the epidemic. Now, Zhong said, if Hong Kong could conduct universal nucleic acid testing in a timely manner, it would be possible to separate neo-coronary pneumonia patients from the healthy population and cut off the source of infection.
According to Hong Kong media reports, 49 of the 92 new cases are men and 43 are women, aged between two and 83 years old.
Zhang Zhujun, director of the Infectious Diseases Branch of the Centre for Health Protection of the Hong Kong Department of Health, said that 72 of the cases were related to previous local infections, but 17 cases had not yet been traced to their source of infection.
The 17 cases were located in different districts of Hong Kong. There were 11 men and six women, aged 14 to 70, who were retired, housewives, salaried workers, and students.
The 14-year-old infected man is a boy from a Hong Kong high school, and his school will be closed for 14 days while all staff and students are tested for the virus.
A smaller outbreak was sparked by the death of a patient at the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospita, where two medical staff tested positive for the virus, Dr. Cheung said.
The Hong Kong Standard quoted Dr. Chuk-chun Chang as saying, “A 77-year-old patient who was hospitalized in August had a fever Thursday night and died soon after. She tested positive for the virus, confirming infection. Thirty health care workers were in and out of the elderly woman’s room, and two tested positive.”
