Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported on November 27 that at the 16th Annual Economic and Trade Dialogue between Taiwan and Canada, the two sides agreed to extend the “Canada-Taiwan Innovation Exchange Year” in order to expand and deepen cooperation in the field of innovation and science and technology. Among other things, the two sides will strengthen Canada’s visibility at next year’s Computex in Taipei, and the National Research Council of Canada will discuss with Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology ways to celebrate 23 years of cooperation.
The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei said in a statement Friday that the economic and trade dialogue between Taiwan and Canada covers a wide range of topics, including trade, investment, market opening, agriculture and indigenous peoples’ exchanges, as well as an exchange of views on international order, restructuring of the global supply chain, personal protective equipment and other related cooperation topics. According to the statement, Taiwan was Canada’s 13th largest trading partner last year and Canada’s fifth largest trading partner in Asia, with bilateral trade volume reaching C$8 billion.
According to reports, 351 agreements have been signed between educational institutions in Taiwan and Canada. In the course of the trade dialogue, Canada and Taiwan have also touched on the importance of language learning and Taiwan’s goal of becoming a bilingual nation by 2030. In the financial sector, the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei and the Taiwan Financial Services Federation recently signed a new agreement to promote cooperation in financial technology.
