Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of Brazil’s president, tweeted his support for the U.S. “Clean Internet” program and denounced China’s use of the network for espionage purposes. The Chinese Embassy in Brazil immediately launched a wolfish counterattack, and on Thursday (26), the Brazilian vice president called China an “indispensable trade partner,” which was immediately and loudly promoted by the Chinese official media.

Eduardo Bosonaro, son of Brazil’s president and chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, tweeted on Monday evening that Brazil supports the “Clean Network” program launched by the Trump administration to build a secure 5G network free of Chinese spying.

The Chinese Embassy in Brazil tweeted dozens of tweets on Tuesday, and then issued a statement on its official website on Wednesday (March 25), saying that Eduardo Bosonaro “openly slandered the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese companies for cyber espionage,” and that his purpose was to The “cooperation with the U.S. in abusing the national security concept to smear China’s image and suppress Chinese enterprises” has also damaged the “friendly atmosphere between China and Pakistan”. The Chinese side claimed that it had made serious representations to the Pakistani side through diplomatic channels.

The statement also took the opportunity to accuse the U.S. of “interfering with other countries’ 5G construction by a few politicians, fabricating lies such as China’s cyber espionage activities, and stubbornly blocking Huawei in pursuit of exclusive digital hegemony.

The Chinese ambassador to Brazil, Yang Wanming, tweeted a series of accusatory tweets from the embassy.

Taiwan political scientist Li Youtan told the station that the recent hardening of attitudes toward China by politicians in many countries, and the attacks by Chinese embassies abroad in response, are part of the overall “war wolf diplomacy” strategy of the Chinese authorities to expand their domestic efforts to suppress dissenting voices overseas.

Li Youtan said, “The same logic applies to China’s “war wolf diplomacy” with India, the Czech Republic, Australia, and Canada. When any country challenges China, if the diplomats do not actively express their war wolf nature, they are likely to be blamed and lose their positions.

Li Youtan also believes that Brazil and China are both members of the BRICS, and that China has increased its expansion and penetration into Brazil in recent years. However, Brazil has become wary of the authoritarian Chinese Communist regime as the Bosonaro administration that came to power in 2018 has been influenced by the Trump administration and the Wuhan pneumonia epidemic that has hit Brazil hard. Eduardo Bonsonaro’s tweets, though personal, are in a sense representative of this political trend. It remains to be seen whether the post-election changes in the U.S. will affect Brazil’s policy toward China.

Li Youtan said: “The first reason why Brazil has become tougher with China at this time is the guidance of the United States; the second reason is that the epidemic is getting out of control, and they realized that even if they gain a little benefit from communicating with the authoritarian Chinese Communist Party, they still suffer more. They are just waking up to the fact that if they use 5G, the entire population of Brazil can be controlled by the CCP. Brazil can’t fight against the CCP alone, it has to rely on the United States and the free world to fight against the CCP.

The Chinese Embassy in Brazil did not respond to our request for comment.

In response to the mention of Huawei in the embassy statement, Australian Values Coalition member and current affairs commentator Huangfu Jing said in an interview that Huawei has become a political symbol as a tool for the Chinese Communist Party’s expansion and infiltration in the West. The fact that the Chinese Embassy in Brazil took the initiative to include Huawei in Eduardo Bosonaro’s statement without mentioning it shows that the Chinese Communist Party authorities are very concerned about hitting Huawei in several countries.

Eduardo Borsonaro’s tough stance on China may be constrained by some of his country’s bought-and-paid-for politicians, but I believe that he will gain public support for his idea.

Huawei is a strategic tool for China’s global expansion and penetration of the world, and the Chinese Communist Party is furious that it has been blocked by Western countries by name,” said Huangfujing. This is not the first time that the Brazilian president’s son has done a very good job of hitting the Chinese Communist Party in the face.

On Tuesday (24th), Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and the Brazilian Minister of Communications Fabio Faria met at ANATEL to discuss the country’s 5G progress. Faria was asked by the Brazilian media whether Brazil would join the “Clean Internet” program as Eduardo Bolsonaro said, but he did not answer and asked the reporter to ask the person directly.

Brazilian Vice President Hamilton Mourão, who participated in a video conference between China and the Brazilian Business Council on Thursday, did not mention the 5G issue, but stressed that China is an indispensable partner for Brazil’s sustainable economic development. The official Chinese news agency Xinhua also gave a high profile to the event, pointing out that China is Brazil’s number one trading country.

Eduardo Bosonaro has now deleted his tweet from Monday’s post, but his personal website maintains five other articles on the subject, including one that categorizes the Chinese Communist Party as an entity that is aggressive and an enemy of freedom.

As early as March of this year, Eduardo Borsonaro tweeted and Facebooked that Beijing’s concealment of the epidemic was a “Chernobyl redux. He wrote that “authoritarian regimes prefer to conceal serious things just to avoid criticism that should have saved countless lives” and that “it’s China’s fault, freedom is the only way out”. He also retweeted a message that read: “The culprit of the global coronavirus pandemic has only one name: the Chinese Communist Party.

Later, the Chinese ambassador to Brazil, Yang Wanming, accused Mr. Bosonaro of “insulting China” and the official Chinese embassy in Brazil tweeted ironically that Mr. Bosonaro was competing to be the spokesman for the United States. Subsequent Chinese statements accused Eduardo Bosonaro of making “insulting remarks about China’s political system,” which was a “blatant provocation to the Chinese government and people.
