The preliminary results of the by-election for Texas’ 6th Congressional District have now been decided, and while there is no way to tell who will be the final winner, there is no doubt that the House seat will remain in Republican hands, as Texas voters have handed a runoff to two Republicans.
Since no single candidate won an absolute majority in the May 1 election, two Republicans, Susan Wright and Jake Ellzey, will advance to the runoff as finalists for Texas’ 6th Congressional District based on the number of votes they received.
Susan, the wife of the late Republican U.S. Rep. Ron Wright, had received 19 percent of the vote as of Sunday; Ellzey had received 14 percent. Democrat Jana Lynne Sanchez, who finished third with 13 percent of the vote, conceded on May 2.
Texas’ 6th Congressional District includes the southeast part of Fort Worth and some rural areas. The district’s original representative, Ron Wright, died earlier this year, but the way things are going, the seat is still guaranteed to be held by a Republican. A date for the runoff has not yet been announced.
In a statement after her victory on May 1, Susan said, “Let’s go for this win!” She also used former President Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” as a hashtag.
On Feb. 7, then-U.S. Rep. Ron Wright died of complications from Chinese Communist pneumonia (COVID-19), after years of battling cancer.
Susan said her husband said before he died that he wanted her to do his job, which was to reach out to constituents, listen to what they say and talk to them, and she is doing that now.
Trump endorsed Susan’s candidacy, telling his supporters that Susan is a committed Republican.
Texas is a Republican-dominated state, though in this by-election in the 6th Congressional District, Democrat Sanchez came out with a narrow margin of less than 400 votes. Of the 23 candidates in the race, none won more than 50 percent of the vote, allowing them to avoid a runoff. The race is also considered to be the first competitive federal election in the United States since Biden became president.
