Myanmar military coup more than 3 months old Security forces have killed at least 759 protesters

It has been more than three months since the Burmese military staged a coup to seize power, and large numbers of people took to the streets across the country today to protest against military rule, with local media reporting that security forces opened fire during some of the demonstrations, killing eight people.

Thousands of anti-coup demonstrators took to the streets today, calling for a “spring revolution”.

“Shake the world with the united voice of the Burmese people,” said a statement from the demonstration’s sponsor.

Mizzima News reported demonstrations in towns and cities across Burma, including the major commercial city of Yangon and the second-largest city of Wa (Mandalay), where two people were shot and killed.

Local media also reported three deaths in the central town of Wetlet, two in Shan State, and one in the northern town of Hpakant.

The Myanmar Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (MAPP) noted that security forces have killed at least 759 protesters following a Feb. 1 coup by the Burmese military to overthrow the democratic civilian government.
