The 15-member UN Security Council, which includes five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members, took over the presidency of China in May. China took over the presidency from Vietnam. The turbulent international situation, the crisis and stalemate in Myanmar after the military coup, and the persistent unevenness of the world’s new coronavirus epidemic have been the focus of China’s presidency.
China’s rotating presidency of the Security Council is seen on several levels as being used by China to brand this program as Chinese. Including multilateralism discussions, China wants to present itself as a champion. China will insist on opposing interference in internal affairs and political interference on human rights grounds.
However, the European side is not optimistic about the crisis in Burma, as there have been several Security Council resolutions on the country, and despite the efforts of European and American members, the Council, with the help of Russia and China, has been unable to condemn the violent repression of protests by the military coup authorities, let alone impose sanctions on the military regime.
Among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China is currently a key troop contributor to the UN Blue Helmets.
In relation to the new coronavirus outbreak, China will intensify its vaccine diplomacy, especially in response to the outbreak control in Africa, where China has already delivered export vaccines to 35 of the 54 countries in Africa.
According to Yahoo News, most people in European countries show a preference for a neutral stance in the event of strife between the United States and China. The report also quoted European Union diplomatic officials as saying that the Security Council is the only place where people can have dinner with the devil to imagine that the devil can make a slight difference.
It is Vietnam’s turn to hold the presidency of the Security Council in April. According to Vietnamese officials, the UN and the international community have widely praised Vietnam for its excellent efforts and results in promoting UN Security Council issues during its presidency.
