The Economist said Taiwan is the “most dangerous region on earth” and worried about the tension in Taiwan Strait. The novel “2034”, written by a retired U.S. general, also depicts a horrific future against the backdrop of a world war triggered by the U.S.-China conflict, and is on the best-seller list.
The tensions between the United States and China have not eased because President Joe Biden took office, and recently tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea confrontation, as well as whether the United States and China will eventually go to war, have become the focus of discussion.
Philip Davidson, who just stepped down as commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, said at a congressional hearing in March that China expects to take over the U.S. leadership and that the most likely potential targets for Chinese aggression or military action in the next five to 10 years “are Taiwan, first and foremost,” perhaps even in six years.
A cover story in the latest issue of The Economist calls Taiwan “the most dangerous region on earth” and that a war in the Taiwan Strait would be a disaster that the U.S. and China would have to work hard to avoid.
A novel by retired U.S. Navy Admiral James Stavridis and former Marine Elliot Ackerman, “2034: A Novel of the Next World War” (2034: A Novel of the Next World War), is also available. Next World War, co-written by former Marine Elliot Ackerman, was also published in March. The setting of the novel is the conflict between the U.S. and China in the South China Sea, which triggers a world war.
Although “2034” is a creative novel, one of the authors, Stavridis, was the commander of the U.S. Army European Command and the Supreme Commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) European Allied Forces, and has a deep understanding of the current international military situation. The novel hit the bestseller list as soon as it was released.
New York Times columnist Tom Friedman recently recommended the novel to readers “looking for a compelling summer beach read. He said that although it is only fiction, but pick up the newspaper of the day, but see this fictional 13 years after the world bureau of the novel mentioned the world.
The novel takes place on March 12, 2034, when a U.S. destroyer is sunk by Communist forces while on a routine freedom of navigation patrol in the South China Sea. At the same time, Iran launches an attack, holding a U.S. F-35E warplane hostage. The global pre-eminence of U.S. military strategy hit rock bottom overnight, and the world was plunged into war.
Freeman points out that China is a real competitor in military, technological and economic fields, but still lacks in semiconductor chip design and production. China expects to recover Taiwan not only for ideological and strategic reasons, but also because it wants to include TSMC in China’s military industry.
He noted that in “2034,” China’s superior artificial intelligence-driven cyber stealth, satellite deception jamming and stealth materials give it the technological edge to launch a successful raid on the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and the first thing China does is occupy Taiwan, “Let’s make sure this is all a fictional thing.”
