Breitbart News reported on April 30 that Cheri Bustos, former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) chair and senior deputy to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), announced that day that she would not seek re-election “after ten years of service and after completing this term.” This is the latest Democrat to announce that she will not run for re-election, and her retirement is a major blow to Pelosi and House Democrats, causing the Democrats’ slim majority in the House to be crumbling.
Democrats are rapidly losing seats and momentum as the 2022 midterm elections approach, with some members planning to retire, either to escape defeat or to seek higher office. Bustos’ retirement allows congressional Republicans to be inching toward taking back the House.
The Republican National Committee (NRCC), which is in charge of the campaign, listed in March this year the vulnerable Democrats Republicans hope to defeat in the midterm elections, and Bustos was on that list. So far, the members on the list have been heavily criticized by Republicans, and NRCC spokesman Mike Berg said, “Bustos made the right decision to retire and avoid facing defeat in 2022.”
The April Republican National Committee survey released this week predicts that Republicans will regain the House majority in the midterm elections, with vulnerable Democrats having a tough time defending their seats due to their votes for the “Pelosi socialist agenda. Moreover, Pelosi is the most unpopular politician in the country, with 56 percent disliking her.
