China to reduce migrant workers by more than 5 million by 2020

Migrant workers write all the jobs they can do on signs and hang them on bicycles and motorcycles as they wait for recruitment in Shenyang, Liaoning province, Feb. 25.

The total number of migrant workers in China in 2020 is 5.17 million less than in 2019, and the mobility radius of migrant workers has further shrunk, according to official data released by the Communist Party of China on April 30.

The “2020 Migrant Worker Monitoring Survey Report” released by the National Bureau of Statistics of the Communist Party of China on April 30 shows that the total number of migrant workers in China will be 285.6 million in 2020, down 1.8% from 2019 and 98.2% of the size of the previous year.

The report also shows that in 2019, the radius of migrant workers’ mobility also further shrinks. 169.59 million migrant workers will go out in 2020, 4.66 million less than the previous year, a decrease of 2.7%. Among the migrant workers going out, there will be 70.52 million migrant workers moving across provinces, 4.56 million less than the previous year, down 6.1%; 99.07 million migrant workers going out for employment in the provinces, 100,000 less than the previous year, basically the same as the previous year.

In 2020, the average age of Chinese migrant workers is 41.4 years old, 0.6 years higher than the previous year. In terms of age structure, the proportion of migrant workers aged 40 and below is 49.4%, down 1.2 percentage points from the previous year; the proportion of migrant workers aged 50 and above is 26.4%, up 1.8 percentage points from the previous year, and the proportion continues to increase.

Regarding the increase of 1.8 percentage points in the proportion of migrant workers over 50 years old compared with the previous year, commentator Wen Xiaogang said that young people on the mainland are now reluctant to enter the processing industry and the construction industry, and the overall decline of the labor force on the mainland and the shortage of labor force have forced enterprises to recruit older migrant workers to work, proving the gradual departure of the demographic dividend on the mainland.

The report also said that in 2020, the average monthly income of migrant workers will be 4,072 yuan (RMB, same below), an increase of 110 yuan compared with the previous year.

However, many netizens refuted the report’s average monthly income of more than 4,000 yuan for migrant workers.

“Facing the sea, spring flowers bloom”: “Oh, the average monthly income is 4,000, there is no social security, meals and accommodation, and there are still a few money left.”

“Blood wolf” said: “Migrant workers are not insured for more than 4,000.”

“Lone wolf” said, “The hourly wage is not as high as the minimum wage, and now there are several factories working less than 11 hours a day.”

Some netizens also questioned the average monthly income of migrant workers, which is more than 4,000 yuan.

Netizen “Brother” said, “Sorry, I have to drag the leg of migrant workers this time.”

“Yuyu Ruige” said, “The migrant workers with high income should be those engaged in plumbing and electrical installation, decoration and professional skills, while those engaged in masonry in construction industry and assembly line work in factories have much lower wages. These incomes of migrant workers are not high because they do not have pensions.”
