According to CNN, citing White House insiders, Biden intends to implement a travel ban from India as of May 4.
In a statement, the White House said, “Based on the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the administration will impose restrictions on travel from India.”
Other countries have imposed restrictions on travelers from India. In France, they will be placed in mandatory quarantine for ten days upon arrival. Belgium decided Tuesday to deny entry to Indian passengers.
The New Crown Indian variant, found in at least 17 countries including France, Britain and Germany, is suspected of being more contagious and even causing many unknowns such as reduced vaccine effectiveness.
The surge in New Crown cases has overwhelmed India, a country that lacks hospital beds, medicine and oxygen. On one day, April 30, a world record 385,000 new confirmed cases and 3,500 deaths were announced in a 24-hour period.
On that day, a U.S. military plane carrying more than 400 oxygen cylinders, hospital equipment and one million new coronary reagents landed in New Delhi.
