India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said on November 26, while participating in a forum, that the two sides have held talks on the border standoff between Chinese and Indian forces and will continue the dialogue. He stressed that the Indian government led by Prime Minister Modi will not make any compromise on India’s borders, self-respect and sovereignty.
Singh participated in the 18th Hindustan Times Leadership Summit that day and spoke on a number of topics related to India’s domestic and foreign policies. Referring to the armed confrontation between the Chinese and Indian armies that has lasted since this spring, he said that the two sides have held talks and will continue to engage in dialogue to resolve the border standoff with China. He noted that there have been “conceptual differences” between the Indian and Chinese sides over the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and that problems arise when violations of agreed-upon agreements occur. Singh said, “I would like to assure you that there will be no compromise on India’s borders, self-respect and sovereignty under Prime Minister Modi’s rule.”
The Indian Foreign Ministry said Thursday that the two militaries have held eight rounds of talks and will soon hold the next round of talks aimed at achieving complete disengagement of the border forces of the two countries and full restoration of peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).On November 6, the two militaries held their eighth round of commander-level talks in Chushul. According to a joint statement issued after the meeting, the two sides agreed to seriously implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries to ensure that frontline troops on both sides exercise restraint and avoid misunderstandings and miscalculations. However, a report in the Hindustan Times notes that this effort has yet to achieve a breakthrough. The two sides are said to have deployed thousands of troops equipped with artillery and armored vehicles in the confrontation zone.
