In mainland China’s “ARTCLD China SAP Art Award” event, there is a piece of artwork “197”, which is 197 pieces of women’s underwear placed randomly on the table, has been exposed by netizens, the material used is the creator in an “abnormal way”. The organizers rushed to cancel the creator’s finalist status and take down the work.

According to a report by the mainland media, netizens broke the news on social media on the 27th that the creator of the entry “197” in the “ARTCLOUD China (SAP) Art Award” competition claimed that the material of the work, “women’s underwear”, was obtained through unnatural means. The creator even uploaded a video of the theft process, which the netizen criticized as “disgusting”.

The creator, named Zhang Mingxin, was born in 1985 in Tengzhou City, Shandong Province, and graduated from the printmaking department of the Hubei Academy of Fine Arts in 2008. The competition was organized independently by ARCLD, and the official microblogging site said that the purpose of the award was to discover the young Chinese artists with the most artistic potential and iconic style of our time, and that the artists could upload their artwork for public support.

After the incident circulated on the Internet, the SAP Art Award official microblogging site issued a statement on the 28th, saying that it respects the freedom of expression of contemporary art and artists’ creative ideas, but should abide by the law, and in order to advocate the guarding of a civilized Internet environment, the organizer has deleted the work on the 27th and stopped the dissemination of related works.
