Last year the police first banned the June 4 rally in Victoria Park, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (HKASPDMC) and a large number of people insisted on commemorating Victoria Park. Afterwards, a number of democratic leaders, including Lee Cheuk-yan, chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, and Lai Chi-ying, founder of Next Media Group, 24 people were charged with “inciting an illegal assembly” and “unlawful assembly”. District Court Judge Chan Kwong Chi opened the trial today, and five people, including Chu Kai Dik, Wong Chi Fung, Sham Ao Fai, Yuen Ka Wai and Leung Kai Ching, had earlier indicated through their lawyers that they intended to plead guilty to “unlawful assembly”. Today, Dickson Chu withdrew the decision to plead guilty. (Chen Runnan comprehensive report)
The 47 case has been remanded to custody, when leaving the prisoner bar pull off the mask, smiling and shouting: “Thanks a lot, hold on!” “Thank you all, Hong Kong people cheer ah!” A number of spectators responded, “Hang in there!” “We’re hanging on to you, Dee!” The remaining four maintained their guilty pleas.
The senior barrister representing Derek Chu said that he was still considering the direction of his plea. The judge warned that the decision to withdraw the guilty plea might cost him a reduced sentence for his plea. The case will be postponed until June 11.
The remaining 19 defendants in the case have not yet decided whether to plead guilty.
