Local Chinese Neo-Confirmed Cases Increase 7.5 Times Faster

On November 23, the images of tens of thousands of workers blocked at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport to test for the new coronavirus surprised the outside world. For more information, listen to André’s presentation on.

Since November 9, seven local cases have been identified in connection with the airport. Since the outbreak has been largely under control in China, new cases are generally regarded as imported cases, which is probably why the Chinese authorities are paying particular attention to local cases.

In absolute terms, the number of local cases in China is not large, but if we compare them over time, they are growing rapidly. China’s National Health and Construction Commission spokesman Mi Feng told a press conference at the State Council’s Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism on Wednesday that China has accumulated 98 new locally confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the past 30 days, a 7.5-fold increase over the previous 30 days. At the same time, the number of countries of origin of cases imported from abroad is increasing, further expanding the risk of transmission.

According to Mr. Mi Feng, China has accumulated 98 new locally confirmed cases in the past 30 days, most of which came from aggregated epidemics, and the spread of the epidemic has been characterized by the co-existence of “from object to object” and “from person to person”.

The Shanghai municipal government said the one new locally confirmed case is still linked to a worker at the FedEx China Ltd. office in Shanghai at the west cargo terminal of Pudong Airport. The airport has been the source of several new cases of locally confirmed infections in Shanghai recently, with the director of the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Sun Xiaodong, saying the source of the infections may be cold chain food.

According to financial reports, passenger flight movements at Pudong Airport have fallen from 969 on November 9 to about 749 on November 22, a drop of about 25%. Many travelers’ confidence has been affected.

A new case of locally confirmed infection in Tianjin was referred from an asymptomatic infected person. The local cases in Tianjin earlier in the month were suspected to have originated from imported German pork knuckle, while the local cases in many parts of China also pointed to foreign imports of frozen food, which were denied by Germany, New Zealand and other countries.

China’s allegations of neoconavirus detection in imported food caused discontent among its trading partners. Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States have urged China to stop its aggressive neo-coronavirus testing of imported food, which they say is scientifically unfounded and essentially amounts to “unreasonable trade restrictions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is no evidence to date that people can be infected with the new coronavirus through contact with frozen foods or their packaging.

The positive nucleic acid detection rate for imported frozen foods has increased significantly, and the number of provinces affected has increased, with products ranging from seafood to livestock, poultry and meat products, and imported materials contaminated with the virus extending from frozen foods to containers, according to Mr. Mi Feng.

The official said that China will continue to adhere to the “person-to-person prevention” and strengthen the outbreak monitoring, information reporting and emergency response.
