The U.S.-Mexico border wall was a priority for former President Trump during his presidency to stop illegal immigration. Republicans say they will go ahead with the wall if they take back control of the House next year.
Republican members of the U.S. Congress said Monday (April 26) that they would restart work on a U.S.-Mexico border wall if they take back control of the House of Representatives in the 2022 midterm elections. They will elevate border security to the top of their campaign agenda next year.
Liz Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican, said at a Republican meeting in Orlando, Florida, “I think we need to look at all the tools that are possible, and that includes the border wall, but also the technical issues and the ability to move forward again on a deal to keep asylum seekers in Mexico,” The Washington Examiner reported. “
The paper said that despite Cheney being anti-Trump (Trump), all Republican lawmakers seem to agree that Trump’s priority of border wall construction is an effective tool to help stop the surge in illegal immigration across the border, and said construction should resume.
Biden stopped the construction of former President Trump’s border wall after he took office as president of the United States. Construction work was cut off even after building materials paid for by the federal government had been delivered to border-related areas. The move left a large gap in the border wall while construction materials sat on the sidelines.
“We’ve purchased the materials,” said Rep. Richard Hudson, a federal Republican from North Carolina, “and they’re on the site while we’re paying the contractors, but right now, no wall is being built. “
Border security has risen to a major concern for voters in recent months as thousands of unaccompanied minors have flocked to the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum.
In a new Fox News poll of 1,000 registered voters, 56 percent of respondents said they believe Biden bears all or most of the responsibility for the exponential increase in illegal immigration at the border.
The poll also shows that voters rate Biden’s work on border security and immigration issues the worst.
On April 7, Brandon Judd, chairman of the National Border Patrol Council, said the number of illegal border crossers apprehended by the Border Patrol each day has become an enormous threat in and of itself, and the number is unprecedented.
According to statistics released by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on April 8, in March, the U.S. Border Patrol apprehended 172,000 illegal border crossers. In February, border enforcement agents apprehended 101,000 people.
