Scientists at the University of Bayreuth in Germany have studied the effects of BPA and its chemical cousin, bisphenol S (BPS), on goldfish nerve cells.

Elisabeth Schirmer, first author of the study, said it was surprising that many important brain functions in fish were adversely affected by the plasticizer, according to the New Atlas website.

“As the study demonstrates, this damage does not occur immediately, but it is very pronounced when brain cells are exposed to small amounts of BPA or Bisphenol S for up to a month.” Schimmer said.
