To accelerate investment in the U.S., Apple will expand its investment in the U.S. by 20 percent over the next five years, allocate $430 billion to support jobs, and work with suppliers and manufacturers to create 20,000 jobs across the U.S. It will also develop next-generation silicon and drive 5G innovation in nine U.S. states, the company said on June 26.
Apple said the amount will include direct spending on U.S. suppliers, data center investments, capital expenditures in the U.S. and other domestic spending, as well as dozens of Apple TV+ production sites in 20 U.S. states, creating thousands of jobs and supporting creative industries.
In this time of recovery and rebuilding, Apple is strengthening our commitment to innovation and manufacturing in the United States with a generational investment that touches communities in all 50 states,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. We’re creating jobs in advanced technologies, from 5G and silicon engineering to artificial intelligence (AI), investing in the next generation of new business innovation.
As part of the plan, Apple will invest more than $1 billion in North Carolina to build a new campus and engineering center at the state’s Research Triangle Park that will create at least 3,000 jobs in advanced technologies such as machine learning, AI, and software engineering. Apple will also establish a $100 million local fund to support schools and community programs throughout North Carolina and the Raleigh-Furham region, and will contribute more than $110 million in local infrastructure spending.
Apple will also expand its operations across the U.S., and in addition to reaching its 2018 goal of creating 20,000 jobs by 2023, is now committing to creating an additional 20,000 jobs in states across the country over the next five years.
Specific measures include expanding the California team, increasing the San Diego team to more than 5,000 by 2026, a 500 percent increase over 2018 levels, and expanding the Boulder, Colorado engineering team by 700 people, as well as hiring hundreds more people in Massachusetts, Texas, Washington and Iowa. Apple also expects that employees will be able to move into a new campus in Austin, Texas, next year.
Apple will also work with more than 9,000 suppliers and companies, large and small, in all 50 states to support job creation across the U.S. in areas such as 5G, silicon engineering and manufacturing.
The consumer electronics company also said it is spending tens of billions of dollars on silicon engineering and 5G technology development in nine states – California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Texas, Vermont and Washington – and has recently expanded its New Silicon Initiative to help students prepare for careers in hardware engineering and silicon chip design.
