UK announces new phase of vaccination for people under 50 years old

The UK government has launched a new wave of vaccination operations, urging those under 50 to receive the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine, and the UK has moved on to the second phase of vaccination operations, which have been successfully implemented so far.

After meeting the UK’s mid-April deadline to provide the first dose of the vaccine to all people over 50 years of age, the government has continued to gradually loosen the months-long embargo and the second phase of the vaccination campaign is about to begin.

Nearly 34 million people in the UK have received their first dose of the vaccine, accounting for nearly 2/3 of the adult population; the official goal is to have all adults vaccinated by August of this year.

Initially, the UK was one of the hardest hit European countries with 4.4 million confirmed cases and nearly 128,000 deaths, but the vaccination campaign is moving quickly and is estimated to have saved more than 10,000 lives in the UK between December last year and March of this year.

According to an analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Oxford University, the infection rate dropped 65 percent after the first dose of the vaccine, and the number increased further after the second dose.
