Diplomatic conflict heats up as Russia declares U.S. on list of unfriendly countries

The United States is on a list of unfriendly countries that are not allowed to hire Russian citizens to work in their diplomatic services, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said today.

As you know, yesterday President Vladimir Putin issued a decree containing a number of measures to implement existing federal laws,” Zakharova said, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency. Countries that are classified as unfriendly are legally prohibited from employing Russian citizens in their foreign missions. As far as we know, the whole thing started as a result of another wave of unfriendly actions initiated by the United States.”

“I can confirm here that the United States is on the list, and you will soon see which other countries are on the list.”

Russia Today (RT) reported that President Joe Biden ordered the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats for Russian interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election and involvement in last year’s SolarWinds cyberattack, sending a new wave of diplomatic disagreements between the U.S. and Russia in mid-April. More than 30 Russian individuals and organizations have been sanctioned, and U.S. companies have been banned from directly purchasing Russian treasury bonds.

Russia retaliated in kind by expelling 10 U.S. diplomats and introducing measures to ban U.S. funds and non-governmental organizations from interfering in Russia’s internal affairs.

Russia and the Czech Republic have also recently expelled diplomats from each other, and the Czech Republic has accused Russia of involvement in the 2014 explosion of a Czech arsenal, which Russia denies.
