These seven people were already under residential surveillance before their arrest, and they were charged with illegal mining, forced trading and fraud.

According to Hong Kong media reports, Yang Bin, legal director of Dawu Group, confirmed the news of Sun Dawu’s arrest in a post on Weibo on April 22. Sun Dawu’s arrest notice was issued by the Hebei Gaobeidian City Public Security Bureau. According to this, Sun Dawu should be currently detained in Gaobeidian.

The report said that there are signs that the authorities are speeding up the pace of the case, and that the local government has sent 29 working groups to take over Sun Dawu’s company.

Sun Dawu is the founder of the Hebei Dawu Agricultural and Livestock Group, once known as the “top chicken farmer” in China. He resigned as chairman of the company in 2005 and served as chairman of the group’s supervisors before his arrest.

Dawu Group is one of China’s top 500 private enterprises, with more than 9,000 employees, fixed assets of 2 billion yuan, annual output value of more than 3 billion yuan.

Sun Dawu’s insistence on running independent businesses for the benefit of ordinary people and employees and his refusal to collude with power has been widely publicized, and Sun Dawu has been hailed by the media as the conscience of entrepreneurs.

In 2003, Dawu Group was warned by the authorities for publishing three articles on its website: “The Construction of a Well-off Society and the Difficulties”, “A Tribute to Li Shenzhi”, and “A Dialogue between Two Private Businessmen on China’s Current Situation and History”.

The police said the articles “seriously damaged the image of state organs” and demanded that the website be reorganized, suspended for six months and fined 15,000 yuan.

In 2015, Sun Dawu wrote an article publicly supporting human rights lawyers, causing discontent with the authorities.

On Oct. 13, 2020, Sun Dawu posted on Weibo, “Some people say, what do you mean by social blackness? On a clear day, you can not see the truth of the matter; bustling, you can not hear different voices; the powerful and powerful rampant bullying, justifiable inch difficult to walk; live to see ghosts in the daytime, dead to see people at night.”

It is widely believed that Sun Dawu was convicted for his words. Netizens say the Chinese Communist Party is “trying to add guilt to Sun Dawu. One netizen mocked, “If you want to add to the crime, you should add a more relevant crime to Mr. Sun Dawu – the crime of deliberately discussing state affairs and subverting state power.”
