Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced his resignation from the post of prime minister on June 25, but will continue to chair the government as acting prime minister until a new government is formed after parliamentary elections on June 20 this year.
Comprehensive media reports, Pashinyan 25 said in a televised speech on the same day, “In order to hold early parliamentary elections on June 20, today I announce my resignation.” He also announced that his party will participate in the parliamentary elections and that he himself will run again for prime minister.
According to the Armenian Constitution, with Pashinyan’s resignation, his cabinet will also step down together, but the ministers will also temporarily act in their original positions until the June 20 general election.
It is reported that the Armenian presidential administration released a message on the same day that President Sachshian (Armen Sargsyan) has signed a decree accepting the resignation of the prime minister.
Armenia was forced to cede the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and its surrounding areas to Azerbaijan after six weeks of military conflict with neighboring Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region on September 27 last year, which resulted in the death of thousands of people, and signed a peace agreement with Azerbaijan under Russian mediation, which ended the war. The Armenian public held several protests in response, demanding Pashinyan’s ouster.
On March 28, Pashinyan announced that after consultations with the president, opposition leaders and the ruling party team, he had decided to hold early parliamentary elections on June 20 and would officially resign in April.
