ASEAN Chairman-in-Office Brunei issued a statement that member states reached a five-point consensus on Myanmar: First, to immediately end the local violence in Myanmar, all parties should exercise utmost restraint; Second, all parties should start a constructive dialogue for the benefit of the people of Myanmar to find a peaceful solution to the crisis; Third, ASEAN will send a special envoy to mediate; Fourth, ASEAN through the ASEAN Humanitarian Relief Coordination Center (AHA) to provide humanitarian relief to Myanmar Fifth, ASEAN will send a delegation and a special envoy to Myanmar to visit the country.
Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyudin told the Malaysian news agency Bernama that Min Aung Hlaing had agreed to stop the violent crackdown on civilians in the country.
Muyutin said, “ASEAN countries have succeeded (to stop the crackdown on civilians in Myanmar), unexpectedly, did not think that can be obtained in this meeting.”
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the same day that Min Aung Hlaing said he did not object to ASEAN sending a delegation to visit the region. Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, Lee said, “Min Aung Hlaing said he heard our voices and would consider useful suggestions, and he is not opposed to ASEAN playing a constructive role, or ASEAN sending delegations to Myanmar to visit or provide humanitarian assistance, and Myanmar wants to interact with ASEAN to make things go smoothly. “
Min Aung Hlaing, for his part, has not responded so far.
Some diplomats and officials from ASEAN member states revealed that ASEAN leaders hope to use the meeting to talk with Min Aung Hlaing to try to get a commitment from the other side to withdraw local armed forces, and ASEAN member states also hope to cooperate in providing humanitarian aid to Burma, as well as sending special envoys to mediate between the military government and NLD lawmakers to encourage the armed minorities, Aung San Suu Kyi civilian government officials to form a “national unity government “(NUG) to communicate with the military government.
“The “National Unity Government” said it welcomed the consensus reached by ASEAN heads of state to resolve the local crisis, and said it expected “ASEAN to take strong action to restore democracy and freedom of the local people in Myanmar.
Some experts say that ASEAN invited Min Aung Hlaing to attend the meeting, there is a crisis of ignoring the junta’s coup to seize power without regime legitimacy. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) expert Huong Le Thu, interviewed by Reuters, said, “The military head officially attended the meeting, but did not state any concessions, such as stopping the bloody crackdown, so see no constructive effect.”
Since the coup, the Burmese military government has killed and repressed local civilians, resulting in the killing of at least 700 people and the imprisonment of more than 3,000 and the displacement of 250,000.
Indonesian, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Malaysian, Cambodian and Bruneian heads of state attended the meeting in Jakarta, while Laos, Thailand and the Philippines sent their foreign ministers.
