In the face of the fourth wave of Wuhan pneumonia threat, the Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Mr. Matthew Cheung, went so far as to say in his blog on November 22 that he “does not rule out the introduction of more stringent measures”, not for the safety and livelihood of local citizens, but to “put the Guangdong, Macao and Mainland authorities’ mind at ease about Hong Kong”, so as to achieve “the early resumption of customs clearance between the three places in a gradual and orderly manner and restart Hong Kong’s economy”, as if “without customs clearance”, Hong Kong people will starve to death and cannot survive; as if “customs clearance” is more important than all livelihood and health issues, which is completely absurd.
This is the real reason why the epidemic in Hong Kong keeps breaking out again and again, not only because of the third wave of the outbreak earlier, but also because of the fourth wave of the current outbreak.
From the world’s most successful example of fighting epidemics – Taiwan, when compared with Hong Kong or other regions, when it is known that the most effective way to intercept the virus, is to intercept the virus outside the island, so that the virus can not get its door to enter; until November 23, 23 million people in Taiwan, its armed lung cases only 618, compared to 7.5 million people in Hong Kong, there were 5,702 cases, or less than 6 million people in Singapore, there were 58,165 cases, which shows that the closure is the most important epidemic prevention measures.
However, from the comments of senior Hong Kong officials, we can see why Hong Kong’s epidemic prevention is still full of loopholes – that is, “sealing” has never been an option, the government continues to invent excuses for “quarantine free”, following the loophole created for seafarers in June, in October to reveal the loopholes for officials of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government to travel between China and Hong Kong, and now, knowing that the fourth wave of the outbreak is already underway, the government still wants to allow people living in mainland China with Hong Kong resident status to come to Hong Kong free of quarantine.
When the government and pro-government people, for political reasons, are willing to sacrifice the health of Hong Kong people in order to create more loopholes in the epidemic prevention, their “remedial measures” are to think of other ways to restrict the freedom of locals in order to reduce the chance of an outbreak. The truth is, however, that these so-called “remedial measures” only serve to slow down the outbreak of the virus when it occurs and speed up the government’s tracking process. It is completely ineffective at actually stopping the virus from entering the country. To put it simply, the health of Hong Kong locals is being sacrificed in exchange for “customs clearance”; however, what these months have proven is that even if the locals are sacrificed, the loophole created by customs clearance cannot be closed, and the fourth wave of the epidemic will still break out.
Even more absurdly, the government continues to use the epidemic to suppress dissent; for example, it continues to send people to inspect “yellow stores” and to politically prosecute people for “violating the restriction on gathering”. The “masked, body-hugging, twerking” parties are either ignored or not prosecuted at all. So in exchange for a bunch of selfish parties for over 50 years old, kindergartens, elementary schools, Primary 1 to 3, had to suspend classes again. Why are these singing and dancing parties still allowed to take place when there was an outbreak of a “comeback group” on July 1? This proves that the Hong Kong SAR government has never learned any lesson from the last and third wave of the epidemic, and that it was for political purposes then and is for political purposes today.
