German Health Minister Jens Spahn said today that all travelers from India will be banned from entering the country, except for German citizens, as a result of a new mutated virus that has made India the latest hotspot for outbreaks.
We are very concerned about the new variant of the virus found in India,” Spahn told the Funke Mediengruppe. In order not to jeopardize our vaccination program, travel to India must be significantly restricted.”
Spann also pointed out that from 26 onwards, only German citizens will be allowed to enter the country among travelers from India; he plans to classify India as a “virus mutated area” and travelers must be tested before leaving for Germany and must be quarantined for 14 days immediately after arrival.
The German government has classified India as an “area of exceptionally high risk of infection”, effective tomorrow. Germany is the latest country to ban travelers from India based on the new variant of the virus, a measure previously adopted by several countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom and Kuwait.
Iran also said today that it will ban travelers from India, but officials did not say whether any cases of the new variant of the virus found in India have been detected in the country.
India today reported a record number of single-day deaths from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in 2019, with the government struggling to provide enough oxygen to overburdened hospitals. According to official data, nearly 190,000 people have died of the disease in India.
