The Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, known as the “Chinese Oscars”, was held in Taipei on November 21. Although no official ban was issued by Beijing this year, mainland Chinese films were largely absent, and media attention was nil.
A number of Hong Kong films won awards, such as “Night Shift”, a film about the “anti-sending to China” movement, which won the best short drama, and “Trek”, a film about the struggle of villagers in Wukan, Guangdong province, which won the best documentary. However, there are reports that the number of films from Hong Kong is still small.
The biggest winner of this year’s Golden Horse Awards was Taiwan’s local film “The Lost Valentine,” which won five awards, including Best Feature Film. Veteran Taiwanese actress Chen Shu-fang was named both the Golden Horse Award’s queen and best supporting actress for her performance in the films “A Lonely Taste” and “Dear Tenant”.
Taiwanese actor Mok Tzu-yi, who won the Golden Horse Award, emphasized in his speech the importance of “freedom, equality, human rights, film creation and life”.
