The Breitbart News reported on April 22 that North Dakota House Bill 1298, which seeks to protect girls’ athletic rights from shape-shifters, had passed the House 69-25 and the Senate 27-20, but in the end, was vetoed by North Dakota Republican Governor Doug Burgum.
Most polls show strong voter support for protections for female athletes and children, and a majority of Republican lawmakers favor protections for female athletes and children. But an influential minority of Republican lawmakers, siding with business groups, wanted to go along with Democrats and support the ideology of diversity.
Burgum’s veto follows a similar veto by South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem. Activist groups made up of mainstream parents, feminists and sports activists are currently winning similar battles in Arkansas and Mississippi.
Burgum’s veto message sidesteps the issue of protecting the fairness of girls’ sports and whether legal sex should be defined by biology or by “gender identity. Instead, Burgum referred the issue to the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA), which banned boys from playing girls’ high school sports “until they have completed 1 full year of testosterone suppression treatment.
